What inspired you to come up with this idea or concept in the first place? Did someone suggest it to you or
did you envision something new who
s time has come? Does it fill a gap in the market? Do you feel thisB
the way to become your own boss or did you want to just sell the idea to someone else?
Why is this particular idea so important to you?
Have you had this idea for a long time or is it something new? What makes you think that now is the time to
go forward with the idea. Will you loose out if you can
t start as soon as possible and will you be abB
le to
follow it through to completion without delays? Have you thought about what it will take to get started? Have
others urged you to do it know or did you make that decision by yourself.
What is the best reC
ason for doing this now?
Is it a gut feeling or do you have substantial evidence that it will succeed. If it
s a gut feeling where did it come
from? If you have evidence, where did it come from? Did you come to a conclusion on your ownBp or did others
give you facts that lead you to believe it will be a successful undertaking.
What are the facts?
Is this such a good idea that it will be evident to everyone you will need for support. Will a banker or other
lending institution feel it
s worth the risk? If you need family or outside help with the project cB
an you convince
them it
s a worthwhile project? Can you take this idea to a manufacturer in the same field and convince them
they should by it or manufacture it for you.
What makes you think you
re going to gC
et the support you need?

Have you selected a date yet? Why have you chosen that particular date? What are the factors that helped
decide on it? Have you selected an alternative?
What is the latest date you feel you can get started? What factors determine this? Will you be ready by this
date? If unavoidable delays occur, will changing this date affect other parts of the project?
ZErIf everything works as planned, when would you like to have this project finished? Why have you chosen this
date?
EdWhen is the absolute deadline for completion of this project? Why must it be completed by this date?

such as accounting or sales? Are race, age or gender factors which will determine your market? Will it
appeal to more than one market segment as is? Can you modify it to do so if necessary? How?
Can this be financed out of pocket or will you have to go elsewhere for the money necessary to be successful?
Have you explored the various avenues of funding available to you? What have you found? How do they

Which source do you like best and why?
What makes you feel they would be good to do business with? Are they close enough to drive to or will most
of what you need have to be shipped in. Are they willing and able to make changes during the project if it
becomes necessary?
Can you do it at home, or will you have to rent or buy a location for it? If you can
t produce it, who will and do
you have more than one possible supplier of finished product?
If you are planning on being the operator or retailer, where will you set up your business? Have you checked
locations? What will rent, utilities, licenses and necessary site modifications cost? Can you do the

yourself or will you have to hire someone to do it for you?
Are you going to confine yourself to your locality or do you want to be a national or even international
company? Will you need to freight product by major carrier or will someone like UPS or the Post Office

Will you introduce your product or service locally or can you penetrate larger markets? Why do you want
to start in the market you selected? Will you have more control? Will it be more cost effective?

Who do you think will be customers for your idea? Have you decided what market segment your idea belongs
in? Will the government be a buyer for it? Will it fit into the recreational market? Have you thought of B
ways to
sell it to more than a single market? What are they? Will people buy it for themselves and can it be sold as
a gift item?
[t item?
[tem?
Of all the potential buyers/users, who do you think will be the largest purchaser? Is it limited to just one
market segment or can it be modified if necessary to sell to other markets? Will word of mouth assisB:t your
marketing and sales efforts in your market segment?
You can
t do everything by yourself
While your concept is yours and yours alone, to make it reality you
sure to require assistance. Factors to consider are financing, legal problems, prototyping and manufaB
cturing,
and marketing and sales to name a few.
What can you do without assistance? What will you need help with? Will you use family or friends, or will you
look for professional assistance? How will your hel
Clp affect cost and profit factors. How much are you willing to
give away in the way of profit for assistance?
Suppliers can make or break you
Have you checked into sources for items and outside labor necessary
to your project? Who are they? Are they reputable? Have you checked them out? How many have you called?
Do yo
u have at least 3 sources for everything you need? You need to compare prices and quality of your
suppliers products, have you called for samples from everyone of them. What is your impression of the
samples aC
nd service you received?
You can expect support from family, friends, and sometimes even potential customers and marketers for your
product. Who in you family will support you and in what way? Are there any potential partners in the wiB
offering you financial assistance? What do think their motives are? Are their any possible end users who
would be willing to support you?
Not everyone wants to see you succeed
Who are your real or potential competitors? Is there a possibility
of someone covertly trying to scuttle your project? Do you have any real enemies who could do your projB
in through actions with a third party? How will you protect yourself from those who don
t support youor might
even wish to see you fail?

What is it exactly? How does it work? Can you prove beyond a shadow of a doubt to skeptics that it will work?
Is it an original idea or a modification of something already available? Can you patent or copyrightBH it? Have
you actually tried your idea or built a prototype that worked?
If you do have competition for your idea or invention, what makes you think it will sell? Is it actually a better
idea or product than what
s available? Does it or the person who uses it work faster, easier orB~ smarter than
they would with a competitors product? Is your product or idea a replacement for what
s currently on the
market?
What can you about your idea that might make a potential purchaser want it? Does anything it does make
life easier? Will it help someone do somthing faster than they otherwise could of? Can you translate its
feBnatures into benefits a buyer can understand and appreciate?
Can you sell what it does rather than what it is?
Do you want to have your hand in everything from design to sales? What would you like to see your idea
or invention become? What would you do if your competition offered to buy you out or even pay you not to
go ahead with the project?
Will your idea or invention appeal to the general public or does it limit itself to a special interest group? Have
you considered that it might have limited appeal? Can you interest educators in it? Would the B
government be
able to use it? Does it have household uses or recreational appeal? Would is help someone sell or even
manufacture something easier?
What exactly do you need to get started where will it come from and how are you going to pay for it? What
additional costs and/or equipment requirements might you face during the course of the project. What wiB
you do if you run out of money and/or supplies? Do you have backup financing available? Have you found
more than one supplier for your materials? How many outlets do you have lined up to market your idea or
invention.
These can be anything from a reluctant family member, a potential competitor, or a part of your idea or
invention that doesn
t work according to plan. If money is a problem, how will you handle it? How will yoB
handle possible interference with family matters. How would you handle a strong suggestion from a
competitor? Have you considered logistical problems? Are you prepared to go back to the drawing board if
idea or invention doesn
t work as planned the first time? Have you considered that despite your best
efforts, you might fail? What would you do then?
